Scaling Microservices Without Losing Your Mind

David OkaforJuly 28, 20268 min read

Microservices promise independent scaling and deployment, but they introduce real operational complexity: distributed tracing, network latency, and data consistency across services.

When we migrated RetailHub's monolith, we started by identifying seams in the codebase using domain-driven design, extracting the highest-traffic capability first rather than trying to decompose everything at once.

Observability was non-negotiable. Before splitting a single service, we invested in centralized logging, distributed tracing, and dashboards so we could actually see what was happening across the system.

The result was a platform that could handle 12x peak traffic with zero-downtime deploys, but only because we treated the migration as an incremental, measurable process rather than a big-bang rewrite.
